# Journal Portrait: Wall Street Journal-Inspired Art

> The Journal portrait is a hand-drawn homage to the iconic WSJ crosshatch style — refined linework and tonal depth built for high-resolution screens.

The Journal is one of Bareface's most recognisable styles, and for good reason. It draws directly from the tradition of the Wall Street Journal's iconic stipple and crosshatch portraits — a format that has defined authoritative visual identity in business for decades. Your Bareface Journal portrait updates that heritage for modern use: the same crafted linework and tonal precision, rendered at high resolution and delivered as digital files ready for websites, press kits, LinkedIn profiles, and brand collateral.

## Style Overview

The Journal is a modern interpretation of the iconic Wall Street Journal illustrations. This style is not just a headshot — it's a homage to classic artistry, cleverly updated to shine on today's high-resolution screens. Dense crosshatching builds form and volume across the face, while careful variation in line weight creates depth and character. The result is a portrait that carries authority without stiffness, and distinction without eccentricity.

This style is a strong choice for:

* Founders and executives who want a professional portrait with genuine artistic credibility
* Leadership teams building a consistent, editorial visual identity
* Professionals in law, finance, consulting, and other fields where understated authority matters
* Anyone who wants a portrait that will look as sharp in print as it does on screen

<Note>
  The Journal style includes a Certificate of Authenticity with every order, confirming your portrait as an original hand-drawn work.

### Optional Add-On: Source File

You can add a fully layered Photoshop document (PSD) to your order at checkout. The source file gives you — or your design team — complete control over the artwork: adjust colours, isolate elements, or integrate the portrait directly into brand templates without compromising quality.

<Tip>
  The PSD add-on is particularly useful if you work with a design agency or plan to use the portrait across multiple brand applications.

## The Commission Process

Once you place your order, here's how your portrait is made:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Reference Submission">
    Upload your reference photo at checkout, or any time after your order is placed. Your submission is reviewed personally before work begins. If a different photo would produce a stronger result, the studio will reach out before starting.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Artist Commission">
    Your portrait is assigned to a studio artist whose expertise matches the Journal style. Working from your reference photo, they create every line by hand — no templates, no automation, no shortcuts.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review & Refinement">
    Once your portrait is complete, it's delivered through a proofing platform for your review. Take your time, then submit any changes directly. Two rounds of refinements are included with every order before final approval.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Delivery">
    Once you approve the final portrait, your files are delivered to your account and ready to download at any time. If you added the PSD, it's included in the same delivery.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Most portraits are completed within 7–10 business days. If you have a specific deadline, contact Bareface before ordering to confirm availability.

## Reference Photo Tips

The quality of your portrait depends significantly on the reference photo you provide. For the best result:

* **Composition** — use a photo where your face, neck, and upper torso are fully visible and unobstructed
* **Lighting** — natural or professional lighting that illuminates your features evenly, without harsh shadows or overexposure
* **Focus** — a clear, sharp image taken at a reasonable distance (not cropped from a group photo)
* **Expression** — whatever expression you want depicted in the final portrait; expressions are drawn directly from the reference and are not adjusted during refinements

A phone photo taken in good light works well. You don't need a professional headshot to get a great result.
