# How Refinements Work: Adjusting Your Bareface Portrait

> Learn what's covered in your two complimentary refinement rounds, how to submit feedback, and what happens if you need further adjustments after delivery.

Every Bareface commission includes two complimentary rounds of refinements, giving you a structured opportunity to fine-tune your portrait after the initial preview. Refinements are not an afterthought — they are a built-in part of the process, and your artist approaches each round with the same care and attention given to the original creation. Understanding what refinements cover, how to request them, and when to act will help you get the most from this included benefit.

## What refinements cover

Refinements are designed to address the kinds of adjustments that naturally arise when reviewing a finished illustration. Within your two included rounds, you can request changes to:

* **Clothing and accessories** — collar details, tie adjustments, jacket lapels, or other styling elements
* **Minor touchups** — softening wrinkles, smoothing stray hairs, or cleaning up fine details
* **Composition adjustments** — framing, cropping, or the overall balance of the portrait
* **Styling changes** — how hair, clothing colour, or other visual elements are presented
* **Technical likeness** — precise aspects of how your features are rendered relative to your reference photograph

## What refinements do not cover

Refinements are adjustments to an existing, completed illustration — they are not a mechanism for producing a substantially different portrait. In particular, **facial features and expressions cannot be dramatically altered** during the refinement process. Your expression is drawn directly from your reference photograph, and the artist's interpretation of your character and presence is central to the original work. If you want a different expression depicted, the reference photograph itself is the right starting point.

<Note>
  If you remain unsatisfied after your two refinement rounds have been completed, reach out through the contact form or email [hey@bareface.io](mailto:hey@bareface.io) and the team will work with you to find a resolution.
</Note>

## How to request a refinement

After your portrait is delivered, you will receive access to the proofing platform where you can review the illustration in detail. To request a refinement:

1. Open your portrait in the proofing platform.
2. Review the illustration carefully and note the specific changes you would like.
3. Submit your feedback directly through the platform.

Your artist will then revisit the portrait and deliver the updated version for your review. The same process applies to your second refinement round if needed.

<Tip>
  The clearest feedback produces the best results. Instead of general notes like "make it look better", describe exactly what you'd like changed — for example, "the collar looks slightly asymmetric on the left side" or "could you soften the shadow under the chin". Specific, actionable feedback gives your artist the precision they need to get it right first time.

## Deadlines and approval

Refinement requests must be submitted **within 7 days of portrait delivery**. If no request is received within that window, your portrait is automatically approved and your final files are released for download.

If your needs go beyond the two included rounds, additional refinement passes may be arranged, though these may incur an extra fee. Contact the studio before proceeding if you anticipate needing more than two rounds.
