The Refined Line style takes one of illustration’s most enduring techniques — pen-and-ink hatching — and brings it into sharp contemporary focus. Where other styles lean toward editorial drama or graphic energy, Refined Line is precise and controlled: every stroke deliberate, every area of density purposeful. The result is a portrait with dimensional form and quiet authority, one that sits comfortably in serious professional contexts without ever feeling stiff. If your work calls for craft and credibility in equal measure, this is a strong starting point.

Style Overview

The Refined Line portrait builds dimensional form through directional hatching and strategic negative space. Dense, parallel strokes create weight where needed, while lighter application lets the paper define highlight planes. Subtle variation in spacing and crosshatch density suggests depth without tonal shading. The monochromatic blue palette against warm cream stock references classical pen-and-ink portraiture while maintaining contemporary clarity. Executives in creative industries, tech leadership, and professional services find natural alignment here. The approach transforms personality into approachable authority, suitable for brand identities, website hero sections, and professional collateral that values craft without formality. This style is particularly well suited to:
  • Executives and founders in creative industries, technology, and professional services
  • Professionals who want a portrait that signals craft and attention to detail
  • Brand identities, website hero sections, and professional print collateral
  • Teams building a consistent, recognisable visual identity across leadership profiles
Refined Line is one of Bareface’s bestselling styles — consistently chosen by professionals who want distinction without ostentation.

What’s Included

Every Refined Line order includes the following high-resolution files, ready to download once you’ve approved your portrait:
  • White background JPEG — 4072×3256px, ready for immediate use across digital and print contexts
  • Transparent background PNG — 4072×3256px, for seamless placement on any background colour or design layout

Optional Add-On: Source File

Add a fully layered Photoshop document (PSD) at checkout to give yourself or your design team complete flexibility over the final artwork. Adjust colours, isolate the hatching layer, or drop the portrait directly into brand templates.
The monochromatic palette of Refined Line makes it particularly easy to adapt for brand colourways. The PSD add-on is worth considering if you plan to use the portrait across multiple applications.

The Commission Process

1

Reference Submission

Upload your reference photo at checkout or any time after placing your order. Every submission is reviewed personally before work begins. If a different photo would produce a stronger result, the studio will reach out before starting.
2

Artist Commission

Your portrait is assigned to a studio artist whose expertise fits the Refined Line style. Working from your reference, they create the entire portrait by hand — every hatched line and tonal variation drawn with intention. No templates, no automation.
3

Review & Refinement

Once your portrait is ready, it’s delivered for your review through a proofing platform. Two rounds of refinements are included with every order before final approval. Submit your feedback directly, and the artist will make adjustments.
4

Delivery

Once you approve the final artwork, your files are available to download from your account. The PSD is included in the same delivery if you added it to your order.
Most portraits are completed within 7–10 business days. If you have a specific deadline, contact Bareface before ordering to confirm availability.

Reference Photo Tips

A strong reference photo produces a stronger portrait. For the best result:
  • Composition — your face, neck, and upper torso should be fully visible and unobstructed
  • Lighting — natural or professional lighting without harsh shadows or overexposure works best
  • Sharpness — a clear, well-focused image gives the artist the detail needed to work from
  • Expression — whatever expression you want in the final portrait; it’s drawn directly from the reference and cannot be altered during refinements
A good phone photo in natural light is more than sufficient.
